AEDs Malta

What is an AED?

An AED, or Automated External Defibrillator, is a portable electronic device used to diagnose and treat sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) a condition where the heart unexpectedly stops beating effectively.

The device analyzes the heart’s rhythm and, if necessary, delivers an electric shock (defibrillation) to help the heart re-establish a normal rhythm. AEDs are designed to be used by laypersons, meaning no medical background is required to operate them thanks to clear visual and audio prompts.

Why is an AED Important?

  • Every second counts: In cases of cardiac arrest, each minute without defibrillation reduces survival chances by 7–10%.
  • Increased survival rates: When used promptly, AEDs can double or triple the chance of survival.
  • Ease of use: AEDs are designed for public access use, typically installed in schools, airports, offices, gyms, and shopping malls.
  • Legal encouragement: Many countries, including Malta, promote the availability of AEDs in public places as part of emergency preparedness.

When Should an Automated External Defibrillator Be Used?

  • An AED should be used when a person:
  • Is unresponsive
  • Is not breathing or not breathing normally (e.g., gasping)
  • Shows no signs of circulation (no pulse)

In these cases, immediate CPR combined with AED use is the best course of action while awaiting emergency medical services (112 in Malta).

Who Can Use an AED?

Modern AEDs are fully automated, guiding the user through the process with voice instructions and visual cues. Even individuals with no medical training can use one effectively. However, training is highly recommended for workplace first aid teams and safety officers.

In Malta, you can take certified AED and CPR courses through providers such as:

Stories and Inspirations’

Real-life experiences show just how crucial AEDs can be. Across schools, workplaces, gyms, and public spaces, countless lives have been saved thanks to the presence of an AED and someone willing to act.

Whether it’s a teacher reviving a student in class, a bystander stepping in at the airport, or a colleague responding during a workplace emergency, these stories remind us that being prepared can make all the difference.

Every AED placed in a public area increases the chance that the next story is one of survival—and maybe, one day, that story could involve someone you know.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes sudden cardiac arrest?

Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart’s electrical system becomes chaotic, causing it to stop beating effectively. Without proper blood flow, the person becomes unresponsive and stops breathing normally. CPR is important, but it alone cannot restore the heart’s rhythm.
In many cases, delivering an electric shock with a defibrillator is the most effective way to restore the heart’s normal pumping rhythm.

How do I know if an electric shock is needed?

The defibrillator evaluates the patient’s heart rhythm. If a shock is recommended, the device will prompt you to press the flashing orange shock button. If the defibrillator determines that a shock is not needed, no shock will be delivered, even if the shock button is pressed, so an unnecessary shock cannot be delivered.

How does the device evaluate heart rate?

The device features Philips’ proven heart rhythm assessment technology, called SMART Analysis. This is a sophisticated algorithm that simultaneously evaluates several characteristics of a person’s heart rhythm to determine if the rhythm is shockable.

What if I don't know how to operate the device?

The defibrillator will guide the user in English at every step, and special sensors in the electrodes will provide feedback and adjust if necessary.

What happens if I don't know where to place the electrodes?

The electrode cartridge contains two adhesive pads with pictures showing where on the person’s bare skin the pads should be placed, and voice instructions reminding them to look at the pictures. The pads are “smart” because they sense when they have been removed from the cartridge, peeled off their backing, and placed on the patient, which makes the voice instruction match the actions being performed.

How does the device know how much energy to provide?

A technology called SMART Biphasic Impedance Compensation helps the device deliver the right amount of current and energy. Biphasic shock is the treatment recommended by the American Heart Association. The effectiveness of SMART Biphasic and SMART Analysis is supported by over 40 published, peer-reviewed studies.

How long does it take to deliver an electric shock using a defibrillator?

A person’s best chance of survival is to receive the shock within five minutes of collapse. A defibrillator will not save every person who experiences cardiac arrest, but more lives could be saved if those affected were reached more quickly. Rapid response makes the real difference.

What should I tell the medical team when they arrive?

They will know what questions to ask you. Should the hospital need a treatment summary, it can be retrieved from the defibrillator’s internal memory. The EMS provider simply presses the i-button, and the device will verbatim recall events from its last clinical use. A PDF file with the heart rate graph and CPR data can also be exported for the hospital.

What is Philips' background in defibrillators?

Philips is a world leader in automated external defibrillators (AEDs), with over 2 million devices sold worldwide and used by healthcare professionals every day. All Philips defibrillators (both AEDs and those intended for professional use by medical teams) use the same technology recommended by the American Heart Association.
